Piazza Taxingeplan 13

How do you define a public place? What makes people come there and what makes them return, is it benches, politics, money machines, hot-dog stands, art, trees, shadow, Starbucks or Nike concept stores?

Change is what defines man. We gather around interests and exchange views and believes that in one or other way stimulates change, local as well as global. Change relays on the existence of spaces where everyone can voice their specific opinion and public views can manifest themselves. In the square it is you and me that decide the rules.

Taxingeplan is centrally located in Tensta in close relations to subway, shopping-centre and Tensta Konsthall (art-centre). It is originally designed as a traffic circulation site with some parking and loading docks for the shopping-centre. In our proposal we divided the site into two separate areas, one for traffic and one for public use. The public square have been levelled out and covered with a pattern painted with road marking paint. A wide stair is connecting the two levels of central Tensta and thus creating new pedestrian flows. The stair doubles as an audience stand for among other things outdoor cinema, cultural event stage, out door café or as a place to hang out. A new entrance for the art centre blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. An overlooked strip of greenery will be taken over and developed by the local garden association. Through discussions with local authorities and organisations plans are being developed for the use of the square, with reoccurring fairs, markets, cultural stage, out-door cafés.

Since this proposal was a bottom-up initiative we have built our proposal on simple solutions with standardized products and material for public use. We have focused our work on economy of effect, significant changes with small means. Instead of thinking that changing something means doing the opposite, which means simply reversing the image in the mirror and continuing doing the same, this work is all about changing the way things change.

We have turned a place for traffic into a public square.
